Due Thursday
Reread the following quote by William Faulkner, presented on page 451 of The Short Novel.
"The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life."
What an evocative and compelling quote!
Here is your question:
How does Faulkner's quote relate to Gloria Naylor's words on page 288 of The Riverside Reader which state, "Dialogue achieves its power in the dynamic of a fleeting moment of sight, sound, smell, and touch."
Respond in one thoughtful paragraph.
William Faulkner states that “The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.” Abridged I feel that it just means that the main goal for every artist should be to capture the life(motion) by something artificial. By capturing the life of a piece people many years later will be able to feel the same thing as someone years earlier. Gloria Naylor says “Dialogue achieves its power in the dynamic of a fleeting moment of sight, sound, smell and touch.” This quote can be related to Faulkners statement as well. The point of the artist is to create something that emits a moment of sight, sound , smell and touch; almost as it is coming to life, just as Faulkner states in his quote. Both show how an authors goal should be to bring the piece to life.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Faulkner's quote “The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.” conveys every artists's purpose, to create timeless work that will breathe life into its audience. Naylor states “Dialogue achieves its power in the dynamic of a fleeting moment of sight, sound, smell and touch.” which simply translates to the power of words is fast and effective and applies to the effects of sight, sound, smell and touch. All authors aim to create a timeless piece that reaches not only the audiences' ocular senses and auditory senses but also their smell and touch. They aim to captivate all five of their audiences' senses no matter how old the piece is. I feel that if an artist can do this with their work then that is the definition of art.

ReplyDeleteWilliam Faulkner stated "The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life." This quote means that the whole goal for every author is to capture an audience and maintain one for hundreds of years. Gloria Naylor stated "Dialogue achieves its power in the dynamic of a fleeting moment of sight, sound, smell, amd touch." This quote means that every author wants to achieve the difficult aspect of writing, being to reach all of the readers senses, not just sight and sound. Both quotes relate to what an authors goal for their readers should be through their piece of writing. If an author can achieve these points, their writing is a valuable piece of art.
ReplyDeleteI interpreted William Faulkner's quote “The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life" to mean that literature is something that lasts forever. The quote explains that the authors purpose of writing literature is to give readers a feeling that is everlasting. Every time a reader reads his literature he wants them to feel the same as they did the very first time they read it. Naylor states “Dialogue achieves its power in the dynamic of a fleeting moment of sight, sound, smell and touch". I interpreted this quote as meaning when reading a piece of literature you should feel as though you are in the piece. The effectiveness of the literature should make you feel like you are in the story yourself. These two quotes closely relate to each other in the sense that both writers want the feeling of their literature to last a life time. They want their readers to feel the same feeling within themselves that they felt the first, second, third, and every time they read it.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Faulkner once expressed that "The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life." Through this quote, Faulkner indicates that art is about capturing a moment, feeling, or emotion that will last generations and create a lasting impact on persons who view it well into the future. Similar to Faulkner, Gloria Naylor claims that "Dialogue achieves its power in the dynamic of a fleeting moment of sight, sound, smell, and touch." Dialogue and detail are important for a reader to feel connected and involved in what they are reading. Quotes by both Faulkner and Naylor communicate the importance of creativity and detail that give literature a sense of timelessness and bring the piece to life.
ReplyDeleteThe quote "The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life” by William Faulkner and the quote "Dialogue achieves its power in the dynamic of a fleeting moment of sight, sound, smell, and touch” by Gloria Naylor aim to capture the timelessness of literature. These quotes are based on the belief that literature can be read and reread hundreds of years apart and the words on the page can transport the readers to the same place. Written words express the value of small moments and uncover universal truths that, despite setting or time period, will be perpetually relevant.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Faulkner and Gloria Naylor both share compelling quotes that show the effects of great writing and art. Faulkner states that "The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life." This quote suggests the fact that a great piece of art should keep its sense of life indefinitely. This relates to Naylor's quote, "Dialogue achieves its power in the dynamic of a fleeting moment of sight, sound, smell, and touch." Like Naylor, Faulkner believes that a good piece of work should last and evoke the same feeling after being viewed many times. Writing and Art both share the ability to hold onto a sense and allow it to be recalled each time it is viewed.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Faulkner states quotes that "The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life." Gloria Naylor similarly said that "Dialogue achieves its power in the dynamic of a fleeting moment of sight, sound, smell, and touch." Both of these quotes are focusing on the topic that literature can be read many years apart from each other but still hold the same meaning. A good piece of literature can tell universal truths despite time periods.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Faulkner and Gloria Naylor aretrying to convey the fact that many authors create works of art that only can be understand and connected with during their time period. They are saying that magnificent piece should be timeless. In one hundred years someone should be able to read a piece of literature and still be able to connect with it and understand its themes and truths. The literature should be so detailed that the reader is involved and they can experience the same feelings and the people generations before them experienced.
