Directions: Using the notes you took on Eighner's, Giovanni's, and Ehrlich's purpose for writing, write one well thought-out, articulate paragraph in which you discuss the author's purpose for one of the above pieces. Since you are already familiar with the content (what the paragraph is about), your primary focus and goal for this blog is to PRACTICE writing A.P.-level sentences using elevated diction and clearly and concisely worded sentences which convey your meaning. Avoid the use of "dead" words such as
many, a lot, really, and
very. Do NOT write in first person, and maintain a formal tone. Lastly, proofread for proper comma and semicolon use BEFORE publishing your work.
The main purpose of Campus Racism 101 by Nikki Giovanni is to guide African American students through the trials of racism on college campuses, especially those of white predominance. Giovanni informs her black audience of common misperceptions they may encounter and the best ways to not only disregard those misperceptions, but succeed beyond what they suggest. She instructs African American students to make their presence known on campus by getting involved and also offers other pieces of advantageous advice. Beyond inculcating her African American audience, Giovanni uses this piece as an educational tool to enlighten a general audience on the issue of racism and generalizations made about minorities.
ReplyDeleteCampus Racism 101 by Nikki Giovanni has an incredibly clear purpose and that is to instruct both African Americans and whites about what is acceptable in day to day life as a student or teacher. She explains rules for both cultures and even goes so far as to give answers to popular questions she has had to deal with. This piece is not passive in the slightest as Giovanni tells African American students to take a stand and break past the barriers that stereotypes have built on campus and in the world in general.

ReplyDeleteThe main purpose of My Daily Dives in the Dumpster by Lars Eighner is to inform people that dumpster diving is not as bad as what most people think. Seeing how Eighner was a dumpster diver, he tries to convey the complexity and dignity of the process all throughout the piece. He informs his stereotypical audience to reduce the stigma held towards dumpster diving. Eighner also suggests that society should reduce the need to be super materialistic. Not only does Eighner expose his thoughts about people in todays world, he exposes the high percentage of consumers waste. Superior to sharing personal experiences, and the process of dumpster diving, Eighner educates his audience by sharing personal tidbits about life in the dumpster diving world.
ReplyDeleteIn Giovanni’s piece College Racism 101, Giovanni tells the reader how to survive as an African American student in a predominantly white college. The piece not only tells the reader how to survive a predominantly white college, but how to feel safe and successful doing so. Giovanni even goes as far as to answer common questions that the reader may have about college and tells of situations that they may encounter while going to college. Throughout Giovanni’s piece there are hints of what it must feel like being in that situation for a broader audience.

ReplyDeleteThe main purpose of Campus Racism 101 by Nikki Giovanni is to guide minority groups in dealing with racism. Giovanni provides specific examples that directly relate with racism against blacks in a college setting. However, her advice is flexible, and can be used in other settings. Giovanni provides readers with simple steps to succeed in college (though her words can be applied to many different aspects) and overcome the racist remarks. Giovanni also supports her purpose by suggesting appropriate answers to frequently asked racist questions that do not negate their race or show a lack of intelligence. Though using specific examples involving racism against African Americans, the information provided can substantially help any minority group.
Eighner's piece about dumpster diving has multiple purposes. However they can be narrowed down to a select few that are prevalent in the piece. A majority of Eighner's readers will be those who are not dumpster divers so there is a certain stigma with dumpster diving and Eighner attempts to remove or lessen said stigma by educating his readers about dumpster-diving. Going hand in hand with the stigma of dumpster-diving is to educate the reader. By educating the reader on the lives and practices of dumpster-divers the stigma and pretentiousness of those who frown upon the activity is lessened. Eighner also presents to people the idea that society is wasteful and could possibly learn something from his didactic piece about dumpster-diving
ReplyDeleteThe purpose in Giovanni's Campus Racism can be argued to be one of many but the central purpose is to teach black students how to thrive in predominantly white colleges. Giovanni’s piece gives step-by-step instructions on how students can achieve good grades and show their professors that they are hard-working and dedicated. She also answers many commonly asked questions and gives students responses that they can use to combat racist remarks from other students and professors. Giovanni ends her piece by advising all students to make try to make a change in the racism that is seen everyday.
ReplyDeleteLars Eighner wrote "My Daily Dives in the Dumpster" for a number of purposes. One, for example, is in order to explain the process of dumpster diving. Also in order to convey the complexity and dignity of the process as well as present the notion of "scavengers' ethics." Eigner presents scavenging as a "sound and honorable niche." Eigner shows that scavengers still are aware of common courtesies by not scavenging in personal garbage cans.
ReplyDelete"My Daily Dives in the Dumpster" is Lars Eighner's account of a period of homelessness that he went through, and the lessons that experience taught him. The story highlights key moral lessons about how someone who is socially accepted as the metaphorical 'bottom of the food chain' (homeless) may be more self conscious about the enormous amounts of waste produced by home-owners, much of which can be repurposed, or otherwise re-used instead of sending it to a landfill. Another purpose would be to show the morals of "scavengers" as opposed to "can scroungers". Eighner writes of the formalities that scavengers show each other - leaving useful items of interest outside the dumpster among other things - where as can scroungers demolish a dumpster blinding themselves to items of greater value than the five cent returns on their aluminum fixes.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose in Giovanni's Campus Racism can be argued that the central purpose is to teach black students how to thrive in predominantly white colleges. The purpose can also be educating racism/segregation in a white predominate college campus. She uses the technique where she answers a lot of many common questions that she has been asked. She also helps the segregated students, by giving them certain comebacks that they can use to respond to racist remarks from other students and/or professors. I felt like this piece really showed Giovanni's sense of authorization.
ReplyDeleteThe primary focus of My Daily Dives in the Dumpster by Lars Eighner is to reduce the stigma towards dumpster diving. Eighner leads by example, working towards educating people about the realities of dumpster diving. My Daily Dives in the Dumpster informs the reader of how much is wasted daily by consumers and urges them to reexamine their level of consumption and to refrain from becoming materialistic. One of Eighner’s lessons illustrates the complexity of dumpster diving, by showing the reader how to decipher good food from rotten food.
ReplyDeleteOne of the main purposes of Campus Racism 101 by Nikki Giovanni is to give insight to minority groups that are dealing with racism. She describes how to strive in a predominantly white college, and feel safe as well. A perfect suggestion is to not let the common interpretations absorb you but instead prove that anything is capable for anyone that sets there mind to it. Throughout the piece by Giovanni she provides hints as to what it may feel like to be in this type of situation and she is able to relate this for a broader audiences perspective. She persuades students to break the stereotypical barriers that are evident not just on campus but throughout everyday life as well.

ReplyDeleteIn Lars Eighner's piece, "My Daily Dives in the Dumpster", one of the most fundamental points is to convey the complexity and the dignity of the dumpster diving process. He goes in-depth and extensively explains each step of the process in the hopes of reducing the stigma that dumpster diving usually creates and educating the public about the topic. Lars presents dumpster diving as a "sound and honorable niche" and the notion of "scavenger's ethics", in showing the respect that the scavengers have for others, and avoiding their personal trash cans. The piece also forces the audience to see that material possessions are temporary and unimportant. Eighner suggests that society is too materialistic and wasteful, and they should reexamine things before they go to the dumpster. He points out that most of what goes to waste can be reused or recycled into something alternative.

ReplyDeleteOne of the main purposes of "My Daily Dives in the Dumpster", by Lars Eighner, is to raise awareness of consumer waste. Step by step Eighner explains how to separate the edible or reusable waste from the contaminated waste. According to Eighner, consumers throw away perfectly usable items due to minor imperfections. Consumers see these miniscule imperfections and automatically categorize the item as trash. Whether there is slight mold or it is a couple days past the expiration date, consumers jump to the conclusion that the item can no longer be used. Eighner's purpose is to try and get the reader to recognize this behavior and put a stop to it. The author uses his personal experiences in order to persuade the reader to be more thoughtful when deciding whether or not they should throw an item away.

ReplyDeleteThe focal point of Giovanni's piece entitled Campus Racism 101 was to instruct colored students on how to be socially successful in the critical environment they could possibly encounter. Although the audience could have been consisting of white members; in other words a possible purpose could have been to raise awareness for African American or Black students. Even though racism is inevitable throughout the world it can be minimalized, another purpose that can be withdrawn from Giovanni's piece. The tone is not aggressive nor passive; it acquires an admonitory tone in order to get the bimeaning purpose across to the diverse audience. It is told in third person but still portrays a personal account of campus racism.
The main point of "My Daily Dives in the Dumpster" by Lars Eighner, was to raise awareness to the wastefulness in today's society. Eighner first explains how when someone first starts to dumpster dive they try to hide it and are ashamed but soon it becomes natural and others will look away. He explains how to identify if food is edible or not despite imperfections such as mold on cheese that could easily be scraped off. He gives tips on how to be resourceful such as finding dumpsters by pizza places, colleges students and how yogurt can stay fresh even a few days after the expiration date.I don't necessarily think that Eighner is trying to convince anyone to dumpster dive but I think he is making a point that it is so easy to dumpster dive because people are so materialistic and wasteful.
ReplyDeleteNikki Giovanni writes with the purpose of giving Black Students the information they need to be successful in college. In her essay entitle Campus Racism 101, Giovanni expresses her opinoin of how black students need to make themselves stand out to succeed. It is clear that the author understands how black students are treated unfairly and are often put into a position where they face indirect racism. Racism is so common that people overlook it and can come off as impolite without second guessing what they have said. Giovanni believes that if a minority student puts themselves out in the college to be noticed and focuses on the work they need to accomplish, then they will overcome campus racism.
ReplyDeleteNikki Giovani's Campus Racism 101's purpose is very clear and that is to instruct both African Americans and Whites what is acceptable in day to day lives as both a student and a teacher. She explains both cultures and answers common questions for them. She wants the African Americans to stand up for themselves.
ReplyDeleteCampus Racism 101, by Nikki Giovoni, has the main porpous of informing whites and african americans of some of the stereotypes they may face in college. Giovoni does this so that people know how to act around other races and also how to comeback to certain comments, however teaches them maily how to overcome these unintentional racist remarks. She wants whites to be more concience of their wods and for african americans to stand up for themselves.
ReplyDeleteCampus Racism 101 by Nikki Giovanni not only exposes racism, especially in predominantly white colleges, it guides black students in dealing with this racism. She discusses the most frequently asked, racist questions on these campuses and provides answers to dismiss these atrocities. By encouraging black students to not only dismiss stereotypes but surpass expectations, she works to ensure that everyone will have the same chance to succeed in college, despite color.
